Meghan Markle sparkles at Brecon show potential sale

This week has been fairly quiet catching up on regular stock jobs. We brought the Beltex and Texel ewes in ahead of lambing. They should be grateful as the weather has been dreadful; snow, sleet and wind, the fields are just sodden.

The piglets are thriving and growing like mushrooms with tremendous shape. The Gloucestershire Old Spot cross Pietrain is a great combination for a commercial pig. They are just starting to get really cheeky and we’ve adjusted the pen so they can run in and out as they please.

I've taken a quick clip of them over on the FG Shows and Sales Facebook page.

Brecon's show potentials sale at the weekend saw steers averages down by £69, however, heifers were up £200 on the previous year. Trade topped at £6,700 for eight-month-old Limousin cross heifer, Meghan Markle from Dai Brute, Llanfihangel Talylly.

Highlands sold to a high of 10,000gns at Oban for the reserve champion bull, Eoin Mhor from Michael Poland, Southhampton.

Castle Douglas reported the best quality of pedigree Luing bulls seen in a few years. Trade peaked at 8,500gns for a 22-month-old bull from Cadzow Bros, Isle of Luing.

Around the ring Cull cow prices seem to be off the clock at the minute, higher than it ever has been. Tight supplies and the weak pound could be contributing to this.

Hogg prices are still positive; some markets are reporting averages of over £2/kg.

Store trade prices are healthy, particularly in younger cattle.
