Much-needed rain finally arrived, which was gratefully received. Unlike yet another blumin' sheep inspection, the second in just over a year. You receive a phone call and they have to come around in 48 hours. Like last time, the inspection was fine, however it's a right pain when we both work full time and workloads and plans have to be rescheduled at such short notice.

We've had a couple of calves arrive. Our favourite Blue cow which calves naturally, and for the past few years has had bull calves, at last had a heifer calf! Our Dairy Shorthorn house cow calved a Blue cross heifer calf. Both calves we'll keep, the pure Blue to keep the breeding lines going and the cross calf should make a good recipient.

Charolais bull trade peaked at 12,000gns at Carlisle. The trade topper was the supreme, male and junior champion McCaldrick McIntoish. A new Blackface record female record was set at United Auctions Stirling when a ewe hogg from Ian Hunter, Dalchirla, sold for £12,000.

Folk around us have been busy with first cut silage. Living in Cumbria it's not often we complain about the lack of rain. However, we really could do with some wet, warm weather to push the grass on and generally freshen everything up.

I am currently at Balmoral Show in Ireland as the show season sparks into life. As usual, it amazes me how strong the stock is over here. I wish I could get our stock to this level so early.

The spring British Limousin Cattle Society Sale, Carlisle, saw an amazing trade at the weekend. Ampertaine Mozart from W.J. and J. McKay, Maghera, sold to Procters Farm, Clitheroe, for 100,000gns.

Newark had strong trade for Beltex, where the sale topped at 2,500gns. In spite of the dry weather and lack of grass in some places, store cattle are still making good money, although the prime trade is not too exciting. More numbers of new season lambs are coming forward but the remaining hoggs are still a decent trade for the best.

It was a busy and somewhat blustery Bank Holiday weekend, in which we caught up on jobs around the farm. If it stayed still, I painted it. Cattle in our part of the world are being turned out for the summer left, right and centre, and the woods are full of bluebells.

Slightly later than planned we fertilised our fields, so hopefully we get a drop of rain and this gives our grass a boost. The Suffolks were brought in and multivitamined, wormed and vaccinated, so I expect them to thrive in the coming weeks.

Trade was strong for all the beef breeds at the Stirling May sale. Salers, in particular, had a fantastic sale, with overall averages of £5,635 and two-year-old bull, Drumaglea Kes, topping the sale and the day at 12,000gns, equalling the breed record set in February.

Prime cattle remain much the same and stores, cows and calves still seem a good trade, although the dry weather and lack of grass is some areas is giving cause for concern. New season lambs have seen a drop, as to be expected, as numbers rise - although there have still been some big prices, particularly where there has been a spring lamb show and sale.
