Well we got our bull away at the Simmental sale at Carlisle. He sold for 3,300gns to a nice character from Wigton who will be using him on his suckler cows. Bull trade topped at 5,600gns for a Corskie bull, and topping the females was a maiden heifer at 3,600gns sold by William Clarke Livestock. Cows and calf trade looked really healthy, some good outfits were going through the ring making in excess of £2,000.

We've weaned the Suffolk lambs this week and decided on the two ewes I'll show this year. All are being pushed on now to get them in show condition. I just need to hurry up and make my mind up on which of the gimmers will make the show team.

There have been a few pedigree bull sales this last week which have seen a steady commercial trade. Store cattle are very much in demand with plenty of grass about and prime cattle have been worth a bit more in some markets at the beginning of the week. The end of the holiday period combined with more new season lambs coming forward has seen at fall in price but they are still a decent trade. There are still plenty of hoggs around, with heavyweights difficult to sell.

It's been a busy Easter getting one of our young Simmental bulls ready for a sale at the end of this week. He's had a crash course in halter breaking and is walking out well when led. Up until this last week he'd never been on a halter so, considering this, he's really taken it all in his stride. We're halfway through the sale so, fingers crossed, he sells well.

The weather is so mixed. We've experienced just about everything from sun, to rain, to hail. Monday settled somewhat and I was delighted to see the return of the swallows. It really is a welcoming sight to see them swooping and diving in and out of the windows and crevices around the yard.

Aberdeen-Angus bulls sold to 4,350gns at Worcester, with the average up significantly on the year. Store cattle trade remains strong, although prime cattle prices seem fairly static. Sheep trade over the Easter period and the beginning of this week has been fairly good. More spring lambs about now and, although there are still plenty of hoggs, overall numbers are now reducing week on week.

Everywhere you go everyone is in the full swing of lambing, and lambs are pinging and playing about in the sunshine. We are pleased with our lambs which are coming on nicely and benefiting from the spring grass and good weather.

Entries are back confirming for the Royal Highland Show and the Great Yorkshire Show, so I need to get myself in gear: settle on a firm show team for the Suffolks and crack on with getting them show fit.
South Devons saw a solid trade at Exeter mart, with bull prices topping at 5,400gns. The Mart's the Heart sale of Herefords at Hereford mart saw a 75 per cent clearance rate and bull trade topped at 6,600gns. Plenty of grass about also seems to be helping the store cattle trade which is on fire - auctioneers at Wooler reported their best ever trade at the Mart's the Heart sale on Tuesday and it seems to be the same in other marts.

Plenty of spring lambs about now and trade seems good as the hoggs begin to tail off. Prime cattle numbers were down at the beginning of the week, probably as a result of the approaching Bank Holiday, but it's helped push prices up a bit.

We've been busy tagging, tailing and treating lambs for orf before turning them out to grass.

The piglets are about ready to go. They always test my husband's patience at this stage. Finding one beached out and fast asleep in a tub of hen corn, shortly after discovering they had gobbled up all that day's hen and duck eggs, just about finished him off. He cheered up though when one of the recipient cows calved a Canadian Shorthorn embryo bull calf. It's up sucking and looking promising enough.

We are showing its full sister at The Royal Highland Show, so fingers crossed she does well and reassures us we did the right thing bringing this new line into the herd.

Limousin Day at Newark Livestock Market saw bulls topping at 6,000gns for Calogale Lionheart from G. J. Lee and C.M. Lloyd, Carmarthenshire, and females topped at 4,500gns with a maiden heifer, Absolute Melody, from Richard Bartle and Mary Cormack, Herefordshire.

Lamb trade still strong trade on the run up to Easter with a big increase in numbers. Getting less hoggs about now and trade has slipped back at the beginning of the week. Prime cattle numbers also seemed to have tightened which has had a positive effect on trade pushing prices up a few pence a kilo in some markets.

Sales coming up this week

  • Friday, 7 April - Shrewsbury machinery sale at Shrewsbury Livestock Market.
  • Saturday, April 8 - Brockholes Auction Mart is hosting their annual spring machinery sale.
  • Saturday, April 8 - Performance recorded Poll Dorset rams and ewes for sale at Sedgemoor Auction Centre.
  • Tuesday, April 11 - Mart’s the Heart-supported show and sale of store cattle at Wooler Market.

Have a good week.
