This week sees an improvement in the hogg trade

Recently, we had to make the sad decision to get rid of one of our best Simmental cows; she had calved once but then never managed to carry a calf full-term.

Before she went we took the decision to flush her and, having used two different sires to fertilise the eggs, we ended up with 32 viable embryos, which was an amazing result. While it was a difficult decision to take her off-farm, it allows the bloodline to continue.

In the markets, the start of the week saw hoggs have some long awaited improvement in trade and prime cattle were up a few pence in some places. Stores continue to be a good trade, particularly younger cattle, with show potentials at Brecon selling to £5,000.

It’s the second and final round of Stirling bull sales next week and the Farmers Guardian team will be there to keep you up to date with all the action, both online and in print.
