The weather is unseasonably warm and we've snowdrops popping up everywhere. Beltex and Texel lambing has started with a vengeance and, touch wood, it's going well.

Stirling trade was strong for all breeds with Charolais bulls averaging £6,121, with a 83 per cent clearance. Gretnahouse Lord, from A.G. Houston, Gretna Green, stood reserve overall male champion and topped the sale at 25,000gns.

120 Simmental bulls averaged £6,066, with a 75 per cent clearance rate. Top price was 21,000gns for the reserve senior bull, Overhill House Guinness 15, from Richard McCulloch, Armadale.

Salers bull trading saw 10 bulls sell to an average of £6,983. Two bulls achieved top prices of 12,000gns - Whitebog Kracker from A. MacKenzie, Ross-shire and Drumaglea Kingpin 2 from P. Boyd, Isle of Tiree.

Prime cattle have seen a bit of a lift at the beginning of the week and store sales remain particularly strong. Hogg trade is much the same with the lighter weight continentals making decent money but heavier and hill types bring averages down.

Recently, we had to make the sad decision to get rid of one of our best Simmental cows; she had calved once but then never managed to carry a calf full-term.

Before she went we took the decision to flush her and, having used two different sires to fertilise the eggs, we ended up with 32 viable embryos, which was an amazing result. While it was a difficult decision to take her off-farm, it allows the bloodline to continue.

In the markets, the start of the week saw hoggs have some long awaited improvement in trade and prime cattle were up a few pence in some places. Stores continue to be a good trade, particularly younger cattle, with show potentials at Brecon selling to £5,000.

It’s the second and final round of Stirling bull sales next week and the Farmers Guardian team will be there to keep you up to date with all the action, both online and in print.

I was up in Stirling for the Angus, Beef Shorthorn, British Blue and Limousin bull sales this week. It felt so much better with the various breeds all being sold on the same day; there was more of a buzz about the place and the ringsides were packed.

Trade was solid for all breeds, but in particular the Beef Shorthorn trade was tremendous. The bull trade topped with a record breaking price of 26,000gns for the senior bull Glenisla Jackpot from Major Gibb, Perthshire, and the female trade topped at 6,600gns with a really smart heifer, Castlemount Matrix Foxglove Flake from D. McDowell, Newtownards. 65 bulls sold to average a record total of £5,914, to reach an 87 per cent clearance rate, up £1,566 on the year. Females achieved a 100 per cent clearance, averaging £3,016 for 33 sold. Female trade was up £1,100 on the year.

Limousin bids topped at 12,000gns for the overall champion Goldies Lord of the Rings from Bruce Goldie, Dumfries. Leading the Aberdeen-Angus trade was Balmachie Jack Eric from J.F. Lascelles, Carnoustie, which sold for 18,000gns. Let's hope this positive trade is a sign of more to come!

Commercial cattle are also selling well with the store trade on fire, particularly with young suckler-bred types. Prime trade is still moving in the right direction. Prime lamb trade is very mixed with good continentals making a premium but heavy hoggs pulling down the averages.

Sales coming up this week

  • Friday, February 10 - Annual Premier show and sale of Luing cattle at Castle Douglas Mart.
  • Saturday, February 11 - A Mart's the Heart-supported show and sale of show potential cattle at Brecon Livestock Market.
  • Saturday, February 11 - Show and sale of North Country in-lamb females at Lockerbie Auction Mart.
  • Monday, February 13 - Spring show and sale of Highland cattle at Oban Livestock Centre.

The weather was raw as heck at the back end of last week and then turned to constant drizzle. I felt for the hoggs wintering out, poor things.

I was at the British Blue sale last Friday, where trade was flying and the ringside was packed. The sale topped at 11,000gns for the last bull in the ring, Greystone Kellogs from J. and E. Coates. The overall bull average was 5,955gns.

The female reserve champion, Abington Liquorice, from Ian McGarva, topped the female trade at 4,200gns. Let’s see if the good prices carry over to Stirling bull sales next week.

In the prime rings, cattle have seen a bit of a lift at the beginning of the week with lower numbers forward. Hogg trade remains very mixed, with better quality in-spec sheep a good trade. Heavy hoggs are pushing the averages down and farmers are being warned not to let them get too big and fat before selling.

Sales coming up this week
  • Friday, February 3 - First Candlemas Fayre of 1,000+ store cattle at Frome Market.
  • Saturday, February 4 - McCartneys is holding a sale of horses, tack and tools at Brecon Market.
  • Saturday, February 4 - Sale of farm machinery, vehicles and agricultural miscellanea at Ruthin Farmers Auction Mart.
  • Monday, February 6 - Dispersal sale of Zwartbles sheep at Beeston Castle Auction Mart.

Maybe see you at Stirling
