Well I attended Lamma last week. It was unbelievable; a vast sea of all types of tractors and machinery as far as your eye can see, set on over 200 acres. Not an animal in sight! It was so busy with folk and I’d say this is a good event to get a gauge on how the tractor market will fair for the rest of the year.

At home it’s been much of the same, multi-vitamining and fluking ewes and generally looking after the lambers.

Pedigree in-lamb sheep sales continue, with Bluefaced Leicesters selling to £10,200 at Hawes at the weekend, where Swaledales were a good trade as well. Store cattle and sheep trade still seems strong, even though prices are not too exciting in the prime rings, although hoggs have been a slightly better trade for the best at some markets at the beginning of the week.

Sales coming up this week
  • Friday, January 27 - Dispersal sale of the Soutra Suffolk flock at St Boswells Mart.
  • Friday, January 27 - Stone machinery sale at The Gallops, Kidderminster, DY10 4AR.
  • Saturday, January 28 - Flock dispersal sale, from Hilltop Farm Partnership, of Mule and Suffolk in-lamb ewes at Newark Livestock Market.
  • Saturday, January 28 - ‘Rough Diamonds’ in-lamb Rough Fell females, annual show and sale of Bluefaced Leicester females, plus a multi-breed sale of in-lamb females all at J36 North West Auction Centre, Kendal.

Enjoy your week.

Well what a week of weather. We've gone from crisp, sunny days - where the ewes and lambs have been out enjoying the sunshine on their backs - to non-stop rain. The river burst its banks and the ground is completely poached.

In-between the downpours we scanned our Beltex and Texel ewes and were pleased with a percentage of 149.

Not many pedigree sales at the moment but Welsh Blacks sold to 16,000gns at Dolgellau last week. In spite of a steady prime lamb price, although some markets saw a lift at the beginning of the week, store lambs are a very strong trade, so there must be a belief things are set to improve. Likewise, prime cattle remain steady but again, stores seem to be a decent trade. Also, the first ewes and lambs have been seen in the sheep rings, meeting quite a decent trade.

Well lambing continues, we're just about to start the next batch that have come over, then apart from the odd one, that'll be the pure Suffolks finished. A few cattle jobs have been being done this week with bolusing and fluking being fitted in-between jobs. It's never ending!

I was down at Chelford market at the weekend where the ringside was packed with Texel and Beltex buyers. Trade was strong, with a Texel shearling gimmer from Boden and Davies topping at 5,000gns and the reserve Beltex champion, a Woodies imported Beltex gimmer topping at 1,700gns.

Lambs haven't been the best of trade this last week and prime cattle are also steady, although the store trade seems to be holding up at the moment.

Sales coming up this week
  • Friday, January 13 - Reduction sale of commercial beef herds from Pilkington Farms Partnership and Exors P Lory, within Thame Market’s weekly store sale.
  • Saturday, January 14 - Skipton machinery sale of tractors, implements, plant, reclaim and goods and collectables. To be held at Skipton Auction Mart.
  • Saturday, January 14 - 1000 lots of fur, feather & misc items at Selby Auction Mart.
  • Monday, January 16 - Genuine Dispersal sale of 400 in-lamb ewes, Vis: 320 North Country Mules and 80 Texel x NCM ewes, at Rugby Farmers Mart.

Enjoy the rest of you week!

Well the Christmas break was very much enjoyed and was a grand opportunity to catch up with our neighbours.

I managed to squeeze in a morning's beating and this time took Ruby, our young Labrador. She was extremely well behaved and it was a chance for her to mix socially with other dogs, as well as getting her used to the gun. Good news is she took it all in her stride, obviously enjoyed herself and thankfully is not gun shy.

The lambs are thriving and are being turned out through the day. It is difficult not to linger over the fence and waste time watching their antics as they ping about the field.

It’s fairly quiet on the sales front as things start to get back to normal after the glut of Christmas shows and sales followed by the Bank Holidays. Cattle trade remains fairly level but there seems to be an improved demand for hoggs at the beginning of this week which has pushed prices up a bit - let's hope it continues throughout the year.

Sales coming up this week
  • Friday, January 6 - Major reduction sale of pedigree Limousin cattle from the Ellesmere herd, on behalf of Messrs A.H.M. Lea and Sons. This sale is at Welshpool Livestock Market in conjunction with Harrison and Hetherington
  • Saturday, January 7 - Sale of 96 pedigree Beltex females at Chelford Market.
  • Saturday, January 7 - Horse and tack sale at Clitheroe Auction Mart.
  • Tuesday, January 10 - Genuine dispersal of in-lamb ewes, to include 212 continental and Welsh Mule in-lamb ewes, at Shrewsbury Livestock Market.

All the best for 2017!.
