Black and Whites sell to 18,000gns as fundraising hits more than £13,000

It's been a roller coaster of a week for us. Our Patterdale terriers went missing last week but thankfullyMole, the daughter, returned home on Friday afternoon. She was found in the fields about half a mile away: thinner, tired, and sporting a few new scars but, apart from that, all good. We were delighted to see her and so relieved she hadn't been stolen.

We're still combing the area so, fingers crossed, we'll get lucky and Mole's mum will make her way home too.

On Saturday I nipped into Carlisle Mart where, at its Black and White sale, the raffle of a calf was drawn in memory of Louise Hartley.

Louise was part of the Farmers Guardian team and sadly lost her brave battle with ovarian cancer earlier this year. The raffle prize was a calf named Sweetings Euphoric Bubble, kindly donated by John Lawson and Anthony Jackson. All money raised went to the Louise Hartley Memorial Fund. The winner was Frank Mattinson who very kindly put the calf up to be sold. A grand gesture, I'm sure you'll agree. Phil and Rachel Hallhead went on to buy the calf for 2,800gns.

In the main, Black and White sale trade was buoyant, peaking at 18,000gns followed by a 15,000gns bid. Texel trade also topped at 15,000gns at the Christmas Stars sale at Carlisle for a show gimmer from Boden and Davies, with another from them making 13,000gns.

On a busy weekend at Carlisle, in-lamb Suffolks topped at 7,500gns and Blue Texels 4,500gns. Elsewhere, store cattle trade seems to have benefited from some people getting their Basic Payment money last week and has seen a lift in some markets.
