The dry spell continues, enabling folk to get on with harvesting maize cutting hedge.

The British Farming Awards last Thursday were a huge success. It was great to see the Mart's the Heart winners being given their awards and they certainly joined in with the celebrations.

Kirkby saw grand Swaledale trade, where a tup topped at 40,000gns and at Lanark, Blackface tups topped at 85,000gns.Suckled calf sales are in full swing, with a good trade for the best and younger animals, although bigger stores are slightly back on last year. The lamb trade has had a bit of a lift at the beginning of the week as numbers tighten. Let's hope it continues.

It's Agri-Expo on Friday, so maybe see you there.

What a fantastic evening to celebrate the British farming industry!

The room was fit to burst with 650 farmers and industry professionals attending the event. With 15 categories up for grabs, the competition was nail biting, and the atmosphere breath-taking with endless amounts of support for each category.

Group editor Emma Penny hosted the night, huge congratulations to everyone who won! A few highlights were The Cumbrian Flood Recovery Group winning the Outstanding Contribution award for their commitment, hard work and time spent to help those in serious conditions through the disastrous floods in Cumbria.

Lord Don Curry received Farming Hero Award for his lifetime achievement, continuous hard work and life changing decisions to support British Farming through some of its most challenging periods.

Huge congratulations to all the Marts the Hearts winners who accepted their awards last night. Auction marts and those who play a role within the farming and rural community are a vital part of the industry, and the response they received on the night showed how much they contribute to British farming.

Overall this was an outstanding night to celebrate farming in the UK! I’m sure you would all agree this is an amazing industry to be a part of with success and achievement across a variety of sectors.

If you want to join me in the celebrations next year... Just let me know!

Well the weather has turned. The trees are a burst of autumn colour and this has prompted us to bring the cattle in. The last of the tups are now away, which is a relief.

Sadly the piglets are going to have to be confined to barracks as they getting more and more adventurous with their explorations, and I feel our relationship with the neighbours may be compromised.

We managed to squeeze in a trip to Stirling bull sales on Monday. Trade was flying for the Blelack Aberdeen-Angus dispersal sale, topping at 35,000gns for a cow and her bull calf made 10,000gns, that's some trade for an outfit!

Elsewhere there has been some big prices in the pedigree sheep rings, with a £100,000 Blackface ram lamb at Dalmally, although the prime prices seems to be slipping back.

Store cattle trade is still strong, particularly for suckled calves, and anything with show potential is making a good price. There are eight sales pages in Farmers Guardian this week, so you can catch up with all the latest news there.

The weather is still on our side and we've been cracking on with jobs about the place. We made a start on cutting some of the hedges and we are about to flush three of our best Beltex ewes.

Luck has been against us yet again as one of my Suffolk show lambs decided to depart this world just as I stuck my neck out and took part in both the national and northern counties flock competition. This farming lark certainly does test ones' resolve!

On a positive, results just in for the national flock competition and amazingly I was awarded a certificate of merit, which has given me a much-needed boost.

Blackie trade at Hexham was good this week with a top price of 12,500gns. Sheep trade still seems good across most breeds with a new Derbyshire Gritstone record set at Clitheroe, and commercial trade is still holding up in spite of fat lambs being back a bit.

Store cattle trade also seems pretty good if not reaching the highs of last year. Next week's bull sales at Stirling will be a good indicator of the mood in the beef industry, so look out for our coverage and I’ll maybe see you there.

  • Saturday, October 15 – Great annual Kirkcambeck sale of traditional breed cattle.

The sun is still shining and it's such a luxury still having the stock outside. We artificially inseminated some of our Beltex and Texel ewes last week, along with fluking and copper bolused the Suffolks.

The piglets are doing really well, although they are getting more and more adventurous as each day passes. My husband isn't too impressed, however I'm convinced the exercise is good for them.

We got more tups away last week. Trade was a bit disappointing when you think how much you put into the job, there's really minimal profit. We need to have a re-think.

Trade for the British Blues last week was strong with a top call of 10,000gns. Bluefaced Leicester tup trade was serious at Hawes too, topping at 15,000gns twice and a North Country Cheviot Hill ram made the same money at Lockerbie. Rams sales are getting towards the end but the cycle moves on with the first Charollais in-lamb sales seeing a strong trade last weekend.

Sales coming up this week

  • Friday, October 7 – Melton Mowbray Market is running its first autumn store cattle sale.
  • Saturday, October 8 – Great annual show and sale of native breed cattle at Castle Douglas Mart.
  • Saturday, October 8 – Clitheroe Auction Mart hosts a show and sale of Derbyshire Gritstone sheep.
  • Sunday, October 9, and Monday, October 10 – Show and sale of Highland cattle at Oban Auctions.

The die is cast for The Mart's the Heart Awards. We received almost 9,000 votes over the past month. Look in this week's Farmers Guardian for the announcement of the winner.
