Summer shows in full swing as big sheep sales loom

It was Penrith Show at the weekend. The weather was spot on for showing and the show was really well supported. I was delighted to get a first prize with my Suffolk ewe and gimmer, second with my ewe lambs and, to top it off, I won the overall championship with the gimmer.
I went to the NSA Sheep event at Malvern this week. Great pre-event meal of (surprise, surprise) lamb, and it was lovely to catch up with folk. It certainly is feeling more optimistic out in the market and the feedback from the shows and sales I’ve been at is that our new-look FarmersGuardian is going down really well.

Pedigree ram sales kicked off last week at the Suffolk national sale which peaked at 15,000gns. The big commercial early breeding sheep sales are also underway. The demand for quality stock seems to be strong – no doubt being underpinned by the good prime lamb trade which is still significantly above where it was at this time last year.

Some sales coming up this next week:
  • Friday, July 29 – Forthcoming store and breeding sheep sales at Ashford Market, Kent.
  • Friday, July 29 – Limousin National Show at Carlisle Mart.
  • Saturday, July 30 – Prees plant and truck auction held by Malcolm Harrison at Prees Storage, Hangar 3,Shropshire, SY13 3JX.
  • Monday, August 1 – 160th anniversary show and sale of 750 store cattle at Castle Douglas Auction Market.
Enjoy your week!
