Well the advert in Farmers Guardian certainly worked! Six of the nine puppies found new homes.

We've had calls from all over: the two bitches were sold straight away and could have sold five times over. One of the male pups is going to live in Skye!

We're at Northumberland Show on Monday showing Suffolks, so any spare time has been spent washing, dressing and colouring sheep. On top of that, we've managed to get most of the stock sheared.

Sunday night was rather fraught when our two Patterdale terriers went AWOL. One made her way home battered, bloody and bruised and, after a time searching the area by torchlight, we found the mother. She was in rather a bad way so we whipped them both off to the vets. It looks like they've had a run in with a badger. Both are feeling sorry for themselves. I'm relieved they're alive and my husband is in vet bill shock!

The Blue sale at the weekend saw plenty of buyers around the ring and a solid trade. There was also a decent trade for Limousin bulls at the new pedigree sale at Hexham and also at Welshpool. More positive signs across all sectors in the prime rings with cattle up a bit again this week, although it still needs to improve substantially to make a much of a difference to profitability.Spring lambs are also up a penny or two after dipping sharply last week as numbers increase, and at last there looks to be some relief for pig producers as prices seem to be on an upward trend.

  • Saturday, May 28 – Dispersal of the prize-winning Rapidbay-UK herd and the Rendham herd, sale by Hassall Brothers at Market Drayton.
  • Saturday, May 28 – Complete dispersal of arable and stock farm machinery at Thame Market.

The warm weather continues, much-needed grass is growing nicely, and the woods are full of bluebells. Unfortunately, the weeds are taking off too, so we’ve been out spraying.

The pups are benefiting from the sunshine and we've set up a run in the field for them to use up some of their energy and mischief. They are being advertised in this week’s paper. It’ll be sad to see them go, but you never know, they could be future price record breakers like we saw with the 14,100gns sheepdog sold at Skipton mart on Friday. I am tempted to keep one, however, my husband goes deaf when the subject arises!

Balmoral Show was superb last week. The weather was kind, folk were friendly and quality of stock high, with a British Blue winning the beef inter-breed and Charollais winning the sheep inter-breed. I did come away a tad concerned that my show sheep aren't nearly as strong as some I saw in the ring.

Charolais trade was a tad sticky in parts at the weekend, however, top price of 14,000gns was made for a Goldies Bull at Carlisle.

Prime cattle trade has seen a bit of a lift, at least for steers and heifers in the last day or two,so let's hope that continues. Spring lamb averages have seen a sharp drop this week as numbers increase but a lot of markets are still making good price of the best. Surprisingly there has been an improved dairy trade, with several auctioneers surprised just how good it has been. Read this week's paper for all the reports.

Some sales coming up this next week:
  • Friday, May 20 – Bletsoes is holding a dispersal sale of a horse feed manufacturer to include a coarse mix plant, augers, storage and bulk bins, at Nene Milling, London Road, NN29 7LT.
  • Friday, May 20 and Saturday, May 21 – Spring show and sale of pedigree British Blue cattle at Borderway Mart, Carlisle.
  • Saturday, May 21 – Northern spring show and sale of Longhorn cattle at Beeston Castle.
  • Tuesday, May 24 – A Mart's the Heart - supported show and sale of spring lambs at Clitheroe Auction Mart.
Maybe see you at Beef Expo.

Well we’ve jumped straight into summer and much-needed grass is thankfully growing. I took advantage of the warm spell and spent the best part of the day washing the tup lambs and the sheep I’ll be showing this season. On top of this, a scare fence was erected, as the Suffolks appear to think they are goats and were scaling the walls like you wouldn’t believe. No other breed appears to have mastered this skill, thankfully.

The Limousin sale at Carlisle for both females and bulls was good solid trade. Bulls topped at 28,000gns and females topped with two at 18,000gns. There was also a decent trade for South Devons at Stratford and Simmentals at Worcester. Perhaps those farmers who had been waiting for their BPS money are taking advantage of the last bull sales this spring to make new purchases.

There's a little more positivity in the prime cattle rings, but probably not enough to get too excited. Likewise, the sheep trade is holding up with cull ewe and hogg numbers tightening, giving a lift in averages in most places.

Here are a few sales coming up over this next week:

  • Friday, May 13 – A Mart's the Heart-supported sale of 136 sheepdogs at Skipton Auction Mart.
  • Friday, May 13 – Special sale of commercial beef breeding cattle at Aberdeen and Northern
  • Friday, May 13 and Saturday,
May 14 – Two-day sale of pedigree Charolais cattle at Borderway Mart, Carlisle
  • Saturday, May 14 – Bala sheepdog sale at the Rhiwlas Estate, LL23 7NP.
  • Tuesday, May 17 – Moore Allen and Innocent host an unreserved auction sale of agricultural machinery and implements on Manor Farm, Hazleton, GL54 4EB.

I’m off to Balmoral Show this week, so maybe see you there.

There’s been more snow for some unbelievably, however the weather perked up over the weekend around our way and many took advantage of this and caught up on groundwork. We were busy weaning the Suffolks. The ewes were wormed, fluked and multivitamined. The lambs and gimmers we’ve split off and pulled aside ones we will be either showing or selling.

Talking of showing, I took a deep breath and bravely decided to enter some sheep at The Royal Highland only to find out that they were full….it must be a sign. I’ve held my nerve and since successfully entered Northumberland show and The Great Yorkshire.

Store trade seems stronger this week, perhaps the better weather is increasing confidence as more think about putting stock out to grass. Trade at Kirkby Stephen was a flyer although I suspect some of those will be destined for the show ring.

The bull trade at Stirling was a good commercial trade with the averages up on the year for most breeds and Salers setting a new centre record price of 9000gns for a Rigel bull.

There have also been some big prices in the dairy rings with a pedigree Holstein selling to 10,000gns at Beeston Castle and other sales recording good prices for the better quality cattle.

Some sales coming up this week:

  • Friday 6th May – Annual May Fair price show and sale of store cattle at Bridgnorth Market
  • Friday 6th and Saturday 7th May – 2 day sale of Pedigree Limousin cattle (Females Friday and Bulls Saturday) at Borderway Market.
  • Saturday 7th May – Spring show and sale of South Devon cattle at Stratford Market.
  • Monday 9th May – Prize show and sale of store cattle and feeding bulls at Penrith Market.
