This past week we’ve still been preparing our Simmental bull for Stirling, along with bringing inside the Texel and Beltex ewes which are coming up to their lambing dates. I’m sure they must be relieved to be in a warm shed rather than outside in this horrendous wind and rain.

The Carlisle Blue sale last week was very well attended and saw strong trade. Averages were slightly under on the previous year, however more bulls were forward and sold. Hereford breeders had a good sale at Dungannon and it will be interesting to see how the other breeds’ bulls fare over the next month, not least at Stirling.

The Bluefaced Leicester trade on Monday was also good, with price records broken for a female, when a hogg made 11,000gns. Both the store lamb and store cattle trade seem to be holding up.

This last week, like many others, we experienced a real winter wonderland when the unexpected snow landed. Certainly a welcome break from the rain!

We've started halter training our two Simmental bulls. One is off to Stirling bull sales in February. He’s taken it all in his stride so far. Hopefully we’ve got our timings right and he’ll be looking fit enough for the sale.

It has been a quiet week for pedigree sales this week, but in the commercial rings, store hoggs continue to be a strong trade - no doubt bolstered by what continues to be a surprisingly good January demand for prime. But it is unlikely to be the current prime cattle trade that is driving some good prices for store cattle - it must be buyers with plenty of confidence!

  • Thursday, January 21, dispersal sale of the Hartlandview herd of 200 pedigree Holsteins at Sedgemoor Auction Centre.
  • Friday, January 22, premier British Blue sale incorporating the Blue Ladies Classic sale at H&H Carlisle.
  • Sunday, January 24, special New Year sale of in-lamb females and geld gimmer hoggs at Penrith Auction Mart.
  • Wednesday, January 27 - Friday, January 29, a sale of 50-plus tractors at Euro Auctions Leeds Site, Roall Lane, DN14 0NY.
Maybe see you at the Blue sale on Friday.

Last weekend, on a freezing cold, wet Sunday morning, we had the rest of our pedigree sheep scanned. The ewes scanned at 150 per cent which we were pleased with.

There are just a couple of Suffolks left to lamb now. We had a surprise Texel lamb appear when we were checking the outdoor ewes. She must have been caught by a tup lamb prior to weaning. It’s a little cracker. Shame we won’t be able to register it, as working out its parentage may prove somewhat difficult!

In the pedigree sales, Beltex breeders met a good trade at Chelford selling to 4,300gns, with Stuart Wood presumably glad he made the journey from Aberdeen. Carlisle's in-lamb Texel sale saw a 3,500gns top.

In the commercial world, the prime hogg trade does seem to be holding up at a pretty reasonable level, but dairy cattle have taken another dip, with even the best often several hundred pounds less than a year ago. As one auctioneer commented - 'a combination of poor milk price, late farm payments and the weather, are all testing farmers’ resolve', and the betting is on the weather improving first!

Some sales coming up this week:

  • Friday, January 15, sale of 300 suckler-bred continental cross store cattle at Knighton Market.
  • Saturday, January 16, on-farm sale of tractors and implements on behalf of R.L. Richardson, Fieldgate, Cumbria CA10 2QU. Sale by Penrith Auction Mart.
  • Saturday, January 16, store cattle, pigs, sheep and goats on sale at Selby Auction Mart.
  • Monday, January 18, the January dairy cattle show and sale at Lancaster Mart.

Happy New Year. I enjoyed the festive season immensely, although Boxing Day evening was horrendous with the torrential rain. Yet again we faced water creeping too close to the house for comfort. Sadly, others weren't as lucky, and faced devastation from the flooding, some for the second time.
Lambing continues. It’s been up and down to be honest. I may have a couple of showing prospects, but I'm not counting my chickens just yet! Considering my gimmers had a hard time last winter, they improved as 2015 went on and have lambed down really well, proving to be good, milky mothers.

It is probably best not to read too much into the trade in commercial markets over the holiday period, but it has been generally encouraging. The prime lamb trade has held up and even improved in some markets. Store lamb sales are good - best prices of the season at Longtown this week - and the cull cow trade too seems to have firmed.

Some Welsh Black breeders had a good day at the Mart's the Heart supported-sale at Dolgellau on Tuesday. Top price was 9,200gns for a 18 month old bull, although trade tended to be selective.

Some sales coming up this next week are:
  • Friday, January 8, opening special show and sale of store, breeding, feeding cattle, stirks, calves, and store lambs at Cockermouth mart.
  • Saturday, January 9, traditional New Year show and sale of Beltex and Texel females atChelford mart.
  • Monday, January 11, special sale of Border Leicester females at H&H Carlisle.
  • Tuesday, January 12, 'Longtown Ladies' annual show and sale of in-lamb Texels at C&D Auction Marts, Longtown.
